How do case competitions work?

Well,  it can differ from case to case, but here you go!

  • The Kickoff: It all starts with a case, a business problem that’s itching for a solution. Teams are handed this case, which is often shrouded in layers of data, market insights, and business challenges. The clock starts ticking, and the race to devise a winning strategy begins!
  • The Deep Dive: Teams plunge into the case, dissecting it from every angle, identifying issues, and exploring potential strategies. This phase involves rigorous analysis, research, and perhaps, a few “aha!” moments. It’s about understanding the problem, the market, and crafting a solution that’s not just effective but also innovative.
  • The Strategy Craft: Once the problem is understood, teams work on crafting their strategy. It’s about connecting the dots, ensuring that the proposed solution addresses the core issues, is feasible, and has that little sprinkle of innovation that makes it stand out.
  • The Presentation: Armed with a strategy, teams then work on presenting it to a panel of judges. This isn’t just about what the solution is, but also about how it’s communicated. It’s about convincing the judges that this solution isn’t just brilliant on paper but is also implementable and effective in the real world.
  • The Judgment Day: The D-day where teams present their solutions. The judges, often industry experts, professors, or business leaders, evaluate each solution based on various parameters like innovation, feasibility, and the overall presentation.
  • The Glory (or the Learning): Winners are announced, accolades are given, and for some, it’s a moment of glory. But remember, every case competition, win or lose, is packed with learnings, insights, and experiences that are invaluable.

Once you know how it works, I believe the other question is how to win such a case competition. You can either check the whole article about that topic or stay here and let me explain it on my own experience.

Buckle up, it will be a fast ride.

How Do You Win: A Case Study

First, let's set the context. My friend and I won the PwC Consulting Challenge in Prague as a team of two, securing approximately €3,000 in prize money.

What initially seemed like "easy cash" soon became a series of sleepless nights spent in front of our laptops. Nevertheless, it was worth it. Given our small team size, we each took home a significant amount for just a week's work.

But we gained much more than just money. We earned experience, honed our teamwork, expanded our network, and received significant recognition. The recognition was perhaps the most pleasantly surprising aspect.

Now back to the business. How did we win? Let’s break it down.

Reflecting on our journey, four key factors stood out:

  • Grinding: That’s the baseline. You have to put the effort there to win. Of course, it depends on your competitors. But hey, you cannot craft a comprehensive data-driven solution in 5 hours.
  • Extra step: We kind of over-delivered. The competition was about crafting a strategy to bring 10k new Gen Z users to the sponsor’s website. On top of this, we introduced a new business model that would make it economically sustainable and scalable.
  • Know your audience: We did the homework and found out who are the people on the jury. And you know what? It was not hard at all. An hour-long prep helped us to play on the note of everyone sitting in front of us with the final delivery.
  • Presentation: Do not underestimate the storyline. Never. We started with a horrible, but well-placed joke. The executive summary from where we rolled out key attributes of our solution, getting back to the next steps in the end. Simple but effective consulting approach I would say. And I don't even have to say we practiced the speech, right?

All in all, it’s not rocket science and you also need a bit of luck.

Okay, so let’s pretend you just won a nice pile of cash, but what now? Put your achievement on the CV?

Is Participating in Case Competitions Beneficial for Your Resume?

Short answer? Undoubtedly. Extended perspective? It's a resounding endorsement; include it.

The Value of Showcasing Awards on Your CV

Emphatically, yes! And there's no need for undue humility.

Awards, particularly those garnered from case competitions, serve as gleaming accolades that infuse your resume with a distinctive luster.

They signal to prospective employers that you've not only engaged in tangible business challenges but have also excelled in them.

Such recognitions vouch for your analytical acumen, strategic prowess, and eloquent presentation capabilities, all encapsulated in that singular line of distinction.

What's even more pivotal? They underscore your fervor and commitment.

So, How do you put competitions on a CV?

  • Concise Clarity: Explicitly state the competition's name, the overseeing institution, and the date. For instance, Champion, [Competition Name], [Organizing Entity], [Year].
  • Accentuate the Triumph: Beyond mere mention, accentuate it. If it's a significant accomplishment, ensure it stands out amidst other content.
  • Provide Context: Offer a snapshot of the competition's essence. For example, "Spearheaded a quartet in devising and articulating a market penetration blueprint for an innovative product, clinching the top spot among 50 contending squads."
  • Skillset and Insights: Enumerate the competencies harnessed and the insights accrued during the contest. This might span from data scrutiny, market reconnaissance, and strategic formulation to synergistic teamwork.
  • Tangible Outcomes: If your blueprint bore concrete results or was actualized, spotlight it! This bolsters your credibility and underscores the pragmatic relevance of your endeavors.

Incorporating case competitions into your resume accentuates your adeptness in transmuting theoretical insights into pragmatic solutions, collaborating cohesively, strategizing astutely, and articulating persuasively.

It conveys to potential employers that you've grappled with real-world quandaries and have either triumphed or gleaned invaluable lessons.

In conclusion, while it's essential to celebrate your achievements, refrain from over-glorifying them. Relish your accomplishments, but avoid projecting an air of omniscience. Overconfidence can be more detrimental than omitting the accolade altogether.
